Coastal ecosystems in the Southeast Asia are characterized by their rich biodiversity, but have been rapidly deteriorated due to combined effects of various anthropogenic impacts and global environmental changes. In this project, targeting coastal ecosystems in the Philippines, we will investigate the mechanism of maintaining biodiversity of the coastal ecosystems, perform comprehensive assessment of the environmental stresses on them, and analyze their response and recovery processes under multiple environmental stresses and the socioeconomic structure of the local communities causing the stresses. Based on these, we will develop a new conservation scheme to maintain their high biodiversity and disaster prevention function and to realize sustainable development of local communities.

The CECAM MILESTONE:

The five-year CECAM Project officially ended on February 10, 2015. We would like to thank our collaborators, from different universities in Japan and Philippines, local government units and stakeholders in making this project successful.
